Tree well rescue in the Mt. Baker side country. I was skiing a zone with a partner when I passed by a snowboarder upsidedown and buried in a tree well. I only caught a glimpse of his board but it was enough to get my attention. The boarder was with a group of three other riders, all very experienced and carrying beacon, shovel, probe, and walkies.

Jonathan Penfield kept his consistent season alive with a fluid line to take the win. He aired into the approach of the Hoisl cliff, before taking a cross-court transfer at high speed. Jonathan then packed the lower section with clean airs and rode out to victory.

Arianna Tricomi claimed back what she has become accustomed to over the years, first place in an FWT event. She showed her true freeride skills up top, accelerating into an extremely technical zone with pace and confidence, and linked this with a trademark 360 in the lower section.

Andrew Pollard delivered a fluid run from top to bottom, starting with a cross-court 360 at pace above the Hoisl cliff, before sending it deep off the nose. He linked this with multiple features – including another 360 and some huge airs – to finish first. Maxime Chabloz completed an exhilarating run, full of high-speed tricks on the edge, to claim second, with Oscar Mandin finishing in third.

The Freeride World Tour 2023 has its fourth stop in Fieberbrunn, Austria - as always with the best freeriders from all over the world! Michaela Davis-Meehan put down a huge run under pressure to take the win, but, unfortunately, it still wasn’t enough to make the cut. Michaela dropped first and sent two massive airs in the steep, exposed section of the course, boosting out with speed into some fast, powder turns.

Megane Betend delivered a career-defining performance to take first place, ensuring she made the cut for a chance at the world title. Megane didn’t take her foot off the pedal with a fast and powerful display of freeriding, which included an insane triple drop into the finish line.

Max Hitzig threw potentially the biggest backflip in FWT history, sending it so deep it can only be seen to be believed. His entire run was fluid and fast, linking a couple of airs at the top into the historic backflip to finish first.

Mexican rookie sensation Liam Rivera was the first to drop, setting the bar too high for the rest of the field to reach. Liam pointed it straight for the cold, deep pow, linking 360s in both directions to take the win.

After two explosive events in the Pyrenees, the tour heads across the Atlantic to the freeride haven of Kicking Horse, where athletes will have their final chance to lock in points before the cut. Ludovic Guillot-Diat (FRA) took his first FWT win with an exhilarating run, leapfrogging him above the rest of the field to take the first spot in the overall rankings. Ludo navigated some exposure early in his run and sent it large off a cliff to exit, before stomping multiple airs and a huge backflip.

Another first time winner is the Austrian Valentin Rainer, he’s taking the Ski Men category victory home. Second place goes to Ross Tester from USA and coming in 3rd is current FWT champion Maxime Chabloz (SUI).

The snowboard women category went off today, with all athletes delivering fluid, clean runs. Katie Anderson (CAN) made it two wins in a row, extending the gap in the overall rankings and making her the one to beat this season. The Canadian stacked her run with features and fluidity, throwing in a couple of grabs to bring in the freestyle element and a big air mid-run to show her freeride expertise.

The second stop of the Freeride World Tour 2023 will take place in Ordino Arcalís (AND) in the weather window from February 2nd to 9th. as always with the best freeriders from around the world! Thus, the FWT returns to the freeride Mecca of the Pyrenees. This venue has become a staple of the tour, and for good reason. The playful terrain offers opportunities for explosive action and creative freeride lines.

FWT21 runner-up, Katie Anderson (CAN), found a playful line, linking multiple airs and grabs with incredible board control, before cruising through the lower powder field with style.

Michael Mawn (USA) took the win for the second consecutive year with a strong technical line. He threaded the needle at the top of the course, airing into a tight couloir, which threw him out at high speed into the face. He then sent multiple critical airs while maintaining complete control of the board under his feet.

The organisation, riders, and coaches are so excited to be back skiing in a familiar resort, and to be able to display their tricks, and skills accumulated over the season.
